Once known as the President of Gotham City, Jonathan Crane has been through a lot. His life is an unfortunate crossing of being at the wrong place at the wrong time as his drinking-inspired delusion of grandeur crossed with a bored and young Batman. The murder of Jonathan Crane, also known as the first Scarecrow, would leave a lasting impact on Gotham City.
First appearance: The Kalamos Mythos: The Decennium Compendium Chapter 1
History
Jonathan Crane was once a psychologist and the father to one son named Austin but he eventually went down the path of politics, serving as President of Gotham City by 2009. The pressure of politics mounted and eventually, Crane got himself drunk and took on the appearance and alias of the Scarecrow, drunkenly declaring that he was evil and that Gotham belonged to him. This caught the attention of Batman who confronted Scarecrow. Though Batman had beat down Crane, a sneak attack from Scarecrow enraged Batman enough for him to throw a batarang through Crane's head, killing him. Batman would be haunted by his act of murder that day.[1] He was the first President of Gotham City to be murdered in office.[2] Following his death, a provisional government took charge of Gotham to oversee new elections which Harvey Dent ran in.[3] The death of Jonathan would inspire his son to become the second Scarecrow to avenge him.[4]
On Halloween of 2010, Crane mysteriously came back to life via a Black Lantern Ring and began to murder people in Gotham City. He eventually confronted Batman in Crime Alley where Batman slayed him once more with a batarang, taking his Black Lantern Ring away from him.[5]
Traits
Personality
Initially, Jonathan Crane appeared to be a rather timid man who only had delusions of grandeur once drunk though he still had a cowardly streak.
As a Black Lantern, Crane was much more murderous, psychopathic, and cold. He was driven only to consume human hearts.
Appearance
Crane was a bald man. As Scarecrow, he wore a rag robe and wore a jack-o-lantern on his head. On top of said jack-o-lantern was a straw hat. As a Black Lantern, Crane apparently had a new jack-o-lantern but was described as being more pale with maggots coming from his face.

Trivia
- Scarecrow is based on the character of the same name from DC Comics. However, his character design is rather unique and closer to some designs of literal scarecrows or the Headless Horsemen than other popular depictions of Scarecrow from DC Comics.
- The death of Scarecrow was written by Commander Radix when he was in Kindergarten without a proper grasp on the Batman character. Because of the Kalamos Mythos' position on continuity, the death of Scarecrow remains canon and has been the focus point that diverges the Kalamos Mythos Batman character from the DC Batman character.
- Scarecrow being Batman's first villain (by appearance) is inspired by the film Batman Begins.
- Scarecrow is the first Black Lantern to appear in the Kalamos Mythos.
